I’m about to pull my hair out. Been trying since 6 pm to install and run windows 7 64 bit on my new Imac.
it’s now 6 AM!
Ok, apparently the key problem is 64 bit. apple, notoriously does not support the 64 bit versions of the Windows platform. But in the past you could fiddle and fudge drivers to get things running. in fact, my macbook pro runs windows 7 64 bit without ANY problems. perfectly!
unfortunately, the imac is quite a beast and has many hardware configurations that aren’t normally found in average consumer PCs… quad core, good graphics card, good ram… 1 TB disk… oh and quad core i7… with hyperthreading.
anyway, the point is….
1) you WILL run into a graphics driver issue if you have the ati 4850 graphics card. the windows install will try to output to the imac display port in the back…. thus leaving you with a black screen. the way around it is to get to a command prompt and delete the bundled ATI sys driver….
– you get to the command prompt by either using an external monitor, or using the install disk to boot to the command prompt.
2) you will have bluetooth issues. basically win 7 64 bit DOES NOT support the apple bluetooth. period. end of story. get a wired keyboard.
3) if you wanna connect to parallels…. you will have a nightmare. just wont’ work. not supported, not compatible, and generally a big mistake.
i’m gonna try the 32 bit version next. i do NOT want to go back to XP. even though they “officially” support XP.
